Metabolic Testing and Zone Training
Is
Your Training Measuring Up?
I
run 6 days a week but I am not improving.
I exercise almost
every day but cannot lose weight.
I am following
a training plan that outlines miles only?
How "hard"
do I have to run?
These are just a few of the comments often heard
from fitness enthusiasts...folks that are putting in the hard work
but not seeing desired results. The solution to some of these
frustrations heart rate zone training. Training at appropriate
intensities allows you to exercise more efficiently, recover quickly
allowing training on consecutive days, maximize fitness and reduce
the likelihood of overuse injuries and effects of
over-training.
So, the first part of the solution is having access to a heart rate
monitor. The second is to determine which heart rate intensities
will best help you reach your performance and fitness
goals.
Age-predicted formulas for setting training zones are
just that: predictions. In fact, in Total Heart Rate
Training, Joe Friel indicates such formulas are right only half the time.
Fitness levels, body composition medications and individual
metabolism are not taken into consideration. In short, one size
shoe does not fit all! So what is the answer? The second
part of the solution: metabolic testing. A metabolic
assessment alleviates the guesswork by determining where you are most
aerobically efficient, what you are using for fuel and where lactate
threshold is occurring.
Many people train harder than is necessary to reach
their fitness and weight goals. The same workouts, day after to
day can lead to plateaus. Training based on individual
physiology yields results. For quite a few, that means slowing
down! The objective is to train smarter, not harder!
To learn more about metabolic testing and how it will
benefit your training not only for the ½ marathon but any distance
race, join us for this month's informational seminar hosted by Susan
Eichensehr of Tri-City Fitness. Susan earned her MS in Clinical
Exercise Physiology and is also a Certified Personal Trainer.
She is a two-time Ironman finisher who benefited greatly from
individual zone training. She looks forward to sharing her
knowledge with you.
